7. Geillis’ Widow’s Weeds
The Raven dress is actually from season one. The dress was part of Geillis’ widow’s weeds. Terry Dresbach called it the Raven dress because it look like Geillis could take flight. She wrote on her blog about the fabulous fabric she found to make the dress.
"It looks like feathers. I have no idea what the fabric content is, it was an end of bolt special, but I know it doesn’t have a natural bone in it’s body."
The white linen was originally a sea foam color until Dresbach got her hands on it. She also took scissors to the white line to give it a more thinned and wispy quality. The lace around the neck does nothing but accentuate how inappropriately low the bodice lies.
Standard 18th-century widow’s clothing is black and cumbersome material. The widow would not have been allowed to expose any skin while in deep mourning. The thought of wearing white right after your spouse dies would make even the most unsophisticated society faint. The Scottish gentlefolk are not going to stop Geillis from doing what she wants and exert her feminist 1960’s mentality.
