9. Claire’s Mourning Dress

Many fans of the show might overlook Claire’s elegant frock as drab or uninteresting, but it has great historical significance to book readers. If you have watch season one of Outlander, you already know Jamie is a devout Catholic and Claire is not a practicing Catholic. She has lost their child to a miscarriage and must bury her daughter alone. Jamie is in confinement for dueling “Black Jack” Randall. Unfortunately, this is the second time Claire has thrown herself into the Catholic religion to deal with the loss. The first time she launched herself into the Catholic religion is right after she saves Jamie from Wentworth prison. Jamie wanted to be left to die. Claire was left to figure out how to mourn the husband she lost and pray for the one who wants to die.

This time, Claire is in Paris and has clothing to reflect her heavy sorrow. The dark brown is fitting as she lost a child to miscarriage. Claire is in deep mourning. The dark brown color and silk material communicates the depth of her grief.  The dark wine colors of the flowers in the cream skirt are almost a perfect match for the mantilla or chapel veil. The use of a mantilla would have been appropriate for Claire to wear if the funeral is at a Catholic church. Great job by Terry Dresbach and her team for bringing the historical realism for but also giving it a color that is pleasing to the eye.
