19. Kingsguard Armor

The White Cloaks, otherwise known as the Kingsguard of Kings Landing (as opposed to the Gold Cloaks, which are the City Watch), have some stunning metalwork on their armor. They’re so fabulous, it’s a wonder Loras didn’t decided to join them as he did in the books after Renly passed. The thing about the Kingsguard, other than the obvious need for them to look rich and imposing so their King does, is that they serve whoever sits on the Iron Thrones. Be it Targaryen, Stark, Lannister, Tyrell or any of those spokes on the wheel, they are loyal to a chair and not a House.

This means that the show was both free to come up with a totally non-house based design for the look. But it also meant they had to be a little bit generic, while reminding the audience that this was a force that served the Targaryens generation upon generation before Robert’s rebellion. The compromise they ended up with is the scaly plates that suggest a dragon without outwardly representing one. Their center breast plate has a generic crown worked in in the same superb golden filigrees on the shoulders. It’s almost a tragedy when the Faith Militant takes them over in Season 6 and abandons that beautiful metal work for their much plainer sigil. Perhaps it for the best that their first act is to kick Jaime out as Barristan Selmy was before him.
