9. Casablanca, with Rachel Weisz

Casablanca is a slower sort of drama, but it’s hands down a classic – namely due to the sweeping love story between Rick and Ilsa, but also largely because of lead Humphrey Bogart, who managed to infuse Rick with intensity and passion for the woman he had loved and lost even though this movie was his first romantic part. The movie itself takes part primarily within the confines of the upscale nightclub he owns in Casablanca, Morocco (hence the name) and is set in the 1940s.

In terms of casting the genderswapped version of this bar owner and expatriate who has been quietly mourning a missed opportunity for romance, actress Rachel Weisz has both the ability to play an independent woman and someone who would be largely impossible for her love interest to forget even “as time goes by.” An interesting casting choice for that role could be Weisz’ real-life partner, Daniel Craig – who typically tends to play the leading man in his films (he’s been the most recent Bond, after all). Given that Weisz and Craig haven’t made many movies together it would be nice to see them bring new life to a famous love story on-screen.
