10. Female Stormtrooper

For years, fans have been wondering: Can stormtroopers be female? When it comes to First Order stormtroopers, the answer is “yes,” and they aren’t just limited to being cool captains in chrome plated armor. In a “blink and you’ll miss it” moment, an unnamed female stormtrooper gives Kylo Ren an update on the whereabouts of Rey after she escapes her cell on Starkiller Base.

Why is this character, who doesn’t even have a name and whose entire lower body doesn’t make her one blip of a scene, amazing? Before The Force Awakens, there was a common assumption that stormtroopers could only be male, most likely because we never heard a female voice coming out of one of their helmets in any of the previous Star Wars films. The First Order is clearly more progressive than the Empire in that regard, or else all the female stormtroopers in the Empire were not in the films, or they just didn’t have any lines to speak. But girls in real life like stormtroopers as much as boys do, and, like seeing female Jedi for the first time in Attack of the Clones, it’s encouraging to see and hear them on-screen.
