6. Kohei Uchimura barely gets gold over Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev.
Men’s gymnastics IS a thing, whether you watch it or not. Although, if you’re rooting for good ole Team USA, you’re probably not watching men’s gymnastics. Or you love getting your heart broken. It’s not an event we’re very strong in, and in fact, we have been disappointing in years and Olympics past. For whatever reason, our men cannot seem to catch up with the strength and power of our women. But that’s not to say there aren’t awesome rivalries and amazing feats of strength to watch. There’s still some excitement to be had.
This year, Japan’s Kohei Uchimura was the favorite- think of him like a male Simone Biles. He’s been hailed as “the best in the world” and he’s backed it up by winning six world titles. SIX.
This past week, though, he had another guy hot on his trail in the men’s individual all-around. Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev was scary close to taking the gold- but just missed it.
Kohei ended up on top again. His margin of victory? .099
Talk about a close one. Oleg ended up with the Silver and Great Britain’s Max Whitlock took the bronze.
