Top 10 Gymnastics Moments from Rio

7. Aly Raisman’s amazing floor routine- and watching her parents’ agony.
We first met Lynn and Rick Raisman- and their hilarious reactions to Aly’s routines– four years ago, during Aly’s first Olympic run. They became a sensation in the gymnastics and Olympic circles with funny memes and videos of them squirming and hugging and shielding their eyes as Aly flipped and tumbled through beautiful routines. Well they brought their nerves to Rio, also, and we had no shortage of their tension and squirming on screen this year. Every time Aly took the competition floor, NBC was sure to pan over to her parents at least once. The pair seemed especially crazy when she hit that spring floor, though, and for good reason.
Aly has one of the best floor routines in the world- easily a medal-contender and probably her best event.
Part of the stress came from the fact that, four years ago, Aly tied for third with Russia’s Aliya Mustafina in the individual all-around- then missed out on bronze by a tie-breaker. Aliya took third, and Aly took fourth, and she’s been thinking about getting her revenge ever since. But that’s for another slide.
To Aly’s parents- bravo! You and your daughter made it through a second Olympics. Now, go rest. Your Olympic days are likely done.
