 4. Heinz’s “Weiner Stampede”

One of the funniest commercials of 2016 is also one the most dramatic. It involves ketchup, mustard, and puppies. Lots and lots of puppies. When I last checked, the video had almost two-thousand downvotes. But I don’t know what could be unsatisfactory about a bunch of abnormally-shaped dogs running through the field in hot dog costumes. (Full disclosure, my best mate and I dressed up as Ketchup & Mustard for Halloween three years in a row and won the Best Costume Duo at school.) There’s something about the word “condiments” and what it entails that people just find really funny.

The specifics of how the commercial was shot remain unclear. If someone can confirm the height of a Dachshund’s vertical that would be nice, because I find it hard to believe some of those little stubby-legged pups could leap into the arms of those lucky actors. The only thing that would be funnier than a wiener stampede would be a wiener stampede and mini trampolines.

The point of the commercial is to remind everyone that Heinz makes a lot more than ketchup, as they try to branch out with their marketing and flavors. “We just want to make sure we have the right taste, not only for all the people but certainly for all the weiner dogs as well,” said marketing vice-president Michelle St. Jacques on the development of the television spot.

Even if you aren’t a traditional condiments fan, everybody loves puppies, right? You can’t go wrong with puppies.
