8. Willem Dafoe as Marilyn Monroe for Snickers
As far as candy bars are concerned, Snickers has a lot of mystical powers that need to be appreciated more. Snickers can transform Betty White into an average white dude. They transform the late Robin Williams into a taller black guy (“go on the field and look for anything with an O”). Even the great Aretha Franklin turned into another average white dude.
At this year’s Superbowl, Snickers debuted another “You’re Not You” commercial. This time, with Willem Dafoe. Viewers go back in time to the famous Marilyn Monroe “Seven Year Itch” photo that has been parodied to kingdom come for as long as I can remember. Taking on the role of pre-Snickers Marilyn, Dafoe similarly stands above a sewer grate as he complains about the idiocy of what is transpiring. After he is handed a Snickers, he is transformed “back” into Marilyn Monroe. There’s a bonus cameo at the end with Eugene Levy as the guy beneath the street controlling the fan that blows up Marilyn’s skirt.
As with many of the Snickers commercials, the humor is in the absurdity and in the actors they choose to play the “not you” version of the main character. For example, who would’ve thunk that Machete would make the perfect anti-Marcia? And who would’ve known that Norman Osborne would look so good in a dress? It really brings out the thirst for blood in his eyes.
