Love ’em or hate ’em, commercials can be as culturally significant as the television shows they’re sandwiched between.

The greatest commercials are the ones that make you forget about what the company is trying to advertise. You get lost in the tear-jerking family moments (okay, maybe I’m just soft) or triumphant feel-goods. Even the more bombastic ones almost make you want to get on top of your taxes for once.

At some point in your life, you’ve probably had that one night where you were up way past midnight, watching the Magic Bullet infomercial in amazement as recipe after recipe flew by the screen. In my case, I watched that Magic Bullet commercial and thought, “this is what being an adult is all about”. (Being 18 or Over and finally being able to order whatever my heart desired.) This year it was the Smart Mop, for all the times I’ve dropped sand, ketchup and mustard on the floor simultaneously.

Some commercials are so anticipated, they make the Superbowl more important than which teams are playing. The Superbowl has become the prime spot for launching new ad campaigns. Not to mention unveiling never-before-seen movie footage, or trailers for upcoming movies.

2016 has given us a lot of great stuff. State Farm commercials are still my favorite of all time. But don’t forget that this was the year that the Verizon guy went from “Can you hear me now?” to “Excuse me, Verizon, your back is in the way of my knife“. So consider all bets off in small screen waters.
