Welcome back to our weekly video game news round-up! We took a break for the holidays, even though video game news never ends, so we're jumping right back into it without slowing down.
Let's get it!
CES is showing us we have plenty of things to spend our money on
We were hoping CES would give us some insight into the future of handheld gaming. It hasn't disappointed yet, as we've seen Lenovo's next generation Legion Go 2, already available for preorder.
You can read a really thorough round-up of everything that's been announced over here, but some of the bigger highlights that have us excited are the RTX 5000 Blackwell series GPUs, the Acer Nitro Blaze 11 handheld gaming device, all the announcements on updated gaming displays, and a Ghost of Tsushima anime series coming in 2027.
HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 trailer
Oh yes, we finally have another trailer for season 2 of The Last of Us, which our own Jennifer Renson has a lovely write-up on. It gives us a release window of April, which is still too far away.
We're still very curious if it's going to follow The Last of Us Part II beat for beat or play around with the timeline. Because if it starts the same way the game does... it may turn some viewers off rather quickly. We'll have to wait and see come April!
Horizon Zero Dawn will be a movie
With the success of video game TV shows over the last few years, it should come as no surprise that more and more games are getting thrown out there. And with what an interesting story Horizon Zero Dawn is, it should come as no surprise that Sony announced at CES that it's going to be turned into a movie. It's definitely a very cinematic game, so we're happy to see this. We just hope Ashly Burch is involved somehow since she's our favorite.
More Nintendo Switch 2 rumors
Nintendo has to announced the Switch 2 by the end of their fiscal year, which is March 31. And with CES in full swing, the rumors are running rampant. It's bad.
It hasn't helped that there are vendors at CES showing accessories and mock-ups for the Switch 2, so we have a solid idea of what it's going to look like. There's also rumors that the joy cons may be able to be turned into a mouse.
And yet none of them tell me if they'll name it the Super Nintendo Switch! Do it, you cowards!
Xbox Developer Direct on January 23rd
Microsoft just announced that we'll be treated to a new Developer Direct on January 23rd at 10am EST and that there's a "brand-new game" that will be announced during it as well as deeper looks at South of Midnight and Doom: The Dark Ages.
Assassin's Creed Shadows delayed again
This time, the next installment in the series is delayed until March 20 (formerly February 14). In a press release, Ubisoft said they're using the extra month to give "renewed focus" on their gameplay quality. Not sure how much an extra few weeks will give them, but we'll see when it releases in March.
Xbox Game Pass January 2025 lineup
Microsoft announced wave 1 of the Game Pass January 2025 lineup, including Road 96, Lightyear Frontier, My Time At Sandrock, Robin Hood - Sherwood Builders, Rolling Hills, EA Sports UFC 5, and Diablo (PC).
