Video game news round-up: Week of May 24, 2024
The world of video games never slows down, which means we're jam-packed full of news and announcements this week! Let's jump right in and see what's happened in the gaming world this week of May 24.
Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 release
Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 was released on May 21. The sequel to 2017's Senua's Sacrifice, which was a narrative-driven, relatively short game that was fun to play with headphones on. How is the sequel? Metacritic has it at 81 from critics and 7.0 from users. It's definitely short for a game that took seven years to make, we'll say that.
Gameranx has a pretty good Before You Buy breakdown if you're on the fence about it:
First look at Liam Hemsworth in The Witcher
We got our first look at the non-Henry Cavill Witcher for the Netflix series over on Twitter (never X). Check out Netflix's tweet below:
No one seems to be super stoked with the Wish.com version of Henry Cavill (sorry, Liam), but fans haven't been super stoked with the show since the end of season 2. We'll have to wait and see whenever the new season releases (possibly this fall?).
Another Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree trailer
Souls fans are champing at the bit for anything more about the upcoming Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, which releases on June 21st. FromSoftware gave us a story trailer this week!
Still no gameplay footage, but the trailer tells the story of Miquella and the war that sent them to the Land of Shadow. There are hints of somewhere around the Lands Between that players will probably visit, but most of the DLC is wrapped in shadows. Which is fine. We'd rather be surprised in a month!
Call of Duty Black Ops 6 is official
I mean... this shouldn't surprise anyone, but Activision confirmed that 2024's Call of Duty will be Black Ops 6. Based on the teaser trailer released, it looks like the rumors may be true that it's set during the Gulf War. No release date yet, but definitely sometime this year.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake releases on the Nintendo Switch
Finally, let's end on a super fun note that the beloved Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake released on the Nintendo Switch on May 23. And honestly? It's the best version of the beloved GameCube game.
If you're interested, IGN has its review and sings its praises, giving it a 9/10. It reminds us why the original is so loved and only improves upon the source material.
