Triple Threat director Stacey Maltin returns to her roots in Queen of Magic
Award-winning filmmaker Stacey Maltin dives herself back into the magician's world again, but this time not as an assistant. Maltin's latest directorial short film Queen of Magic, first premiered at the Lighthouse Intentional Film Festival. This August, the film was part of the weekend program at the 12th annual Greenpoint Film Festival in Brooklyn, New York.
Maltin has expanded in the industry as an actress, writer, and director such as her acclaimed feature-length music-drama Triple Threat in addition to others. In this short film, Queen of Magic stands out among other shorts as Maltin showcases her growth and development.
The narrative opens with a snapshot that was posted on the film's official Instagram page of a young Addison. In the next closeup shot is an adult Addison in 1890 Brooklyn, New York laying on her bed sideways with a face of rejection.
The fascination about the filmmaking team Maltin and screenwriter Kathy Distefano is to appraise their versatility in creating this piece of storytelling. In viewing the twelve minutes of the short film, Queen of Magic injects a straightforward tagline in a broken English 1890 Brooklyn accent "There ain't no lady magicians," to express that Queen of Magic is a 12-minute ''never quit at chasing your dreams'' short.
However, Queen of Magic is a dazzling period of self-discovery, and coming-of-age from the production design, and the wardrobe to the hair. Also, Queen of Magic set an example of filming a short with such a low budget and fewer resources for the effects that would cost an exceptional amount of dollars.
Queen of Magic director Maltin seated next to three other filmmakers at Greenpoint Film Festival's Saturday agenda. The panel was an insightful, informative discussion as each of the directors shared openly about the process and response to the audience's questions.
