The Queen of Genovia returns with The Princess Diaries 3

Twenty years after Mia Thermopolis accepted the crown as Queen of Genovia in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, it looks like the audience gets to see how Mia's story continued, as Anne Hathaway has confirmed the reprisal of her iconic breakout role along with the announcement that a third installment to the series is on its way, set to be directed by Adele Lim.

Adele Lim has also been attached to projects such as Crazy Rich Asians, Joy Ride, and Raya and the Last Dragon.

When audiences left Mia Thermopolis, she was beginning to change Genovia's rules, laws, and expectations, by stepping into power without a husband at her side. However, the conclusion of The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement did imply that Mia would be moving forward in a romantic relationship with Nicholas Deveraux, played by Chris Pine.

Meanwhile, Queen Clarisse stepped down from her reign, and concluded the film marrying her long time companion, Joe.

There have been no official confirmations yet about the returns of Julie Andrews, Héctor Elizondo, Chris Pine, or Heather Matarazzo, who portrayed Mia's best friend, Lilly Moscovitz.

So, what type of story will The Princess Diaries 3 follow? The original two films thrived in telling the story of an average girl thrust into a world so different from the one she grew up in that the comedy came from her attempts to grow into the role expected of her. But, if Mia has now been Queen of Genovia for decades, what story will follow her this time?

The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, were both directed by Garry Marshall, who crafted a comical, elegant, and joyful world from the original novels written by Meg Cabot.

There are certainly various amusing storylines that could follow a more adult Mia Thermopolis, and it will be exciting to see if the rest of the original cast join Mia's next adventure.
