Swan Lake teaser revealed as global release set for IMAX-Filmed Paris Opera ballet
By Tiara Starks
The most famous ballet of all time is making its big screen debut in IMAX. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for Paris Opera's production of Swan Lake as it heads to theaters for three days only on Nov. 8.
The story of Swan Lake follows Prince Siegfried, who must choose a bride during his birthday. The prince ends up meeting Odette, a princess who has been transformed into a swan by Rothbart, a sorcerer. Siegfried then promises to save and invite Odette to his party. Hearing of this, Rothbart sends his daughter Odile, disguised as Odette in order to seduce him. Swan Lake was Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's first ballet in 1877. The ballet has been referenced and featured in story lines of many forms of media since its inception, including contemporary films such as Darren Aronofsky's psychological horror Black Swan in which Natalie Portman plays Nina Sayers, a dancer who is portraying Odette in a production of Swan Lake within the film. Opposite Portman is Mila Kunis, who plays Lily, a dancer who is portraying Odile in the same production. A movie adaptation of Swan Lake was previously announced to be in the works that would see Felicity Jones in a lead role.
This filmed version marks Paris Opera’s biggest worldwide theatrical release, including roughly 2,000 cinemas. Pathé Live handles global distribution on the film from director Isabelle Julien. The cast features Sae Eun Park (Odette/Odile), Paul Marque (Prince Siegfried), Pablo Legasa (Rothbart) and Paris Opera Corps de Ballet. The Paris Opera Orchestra is conducted by Vello Pähn.
What makes Swan Lake in IMAX film even more unique is that it required four days of shooting. All with IMAX-certified digital cameras. Two of those days were shot without an audience to allow cameras to be on stage and alongside the performers. The IMAX format is meant to bring this story to life even more, with sequences being highlighted, making it a great story to bring from the stage to the screen. The film has a runtime of 2 hours and 25 minutes.
