Paramount Pictures has submitted Gladiator 2 for 15 Oscar nomination considerations
Although award season is some time away, but that hasn't stopped Paramount Pictures from submitting Gladiator 2 for Oscar nomination considerations. The film, a sequel to the Oscar award-winning Gladiator from 2000 starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, is due to arrive in theaters on November 22.
The story will center around Maximus' son Lucius (Paul Mescal) seeking revenge for the loss of his loved ones during one of the most influential and dominant times in all of history; Ancient Rome. As Lucius' fate of becoming a gladiator like his father before him takes shape, other key players come into the fray, including Macrinus (Denzel Washington) who seeks power from the cruel and psychotic Emperors Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger), and who will use Lucius to do so.
External factors such as the man responsible for Lucius' pain; the formidable General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) will prove to complicate matters, especially for Lucius' mother Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). Although the story, from what we can gather thus far, sounds like another epic in the making, a film created to attract that coveted, pure Oscar-winning gold, will it be worthy of Academy Award nominations?
Will Gladiator 2 receive any 2025 Oscar nominations?
In total Gladiator 2 has been submitted for 15 Oscar nominations including and not surprisingly, Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score. As both Gladiator 2 trailers have currently reached a combined total of 31 million views on YouTube, it's clear the film is becoming one of the most highly anticipated movie theater experiences of the year.
But will the film prove to be as memorable, powerful, and epic as its predecessor? Will we see the likes of Mescal, Pascal, Quinn, or Nielsen win their first Oscar?
