National Donut Day: The history and what your favorite donut says about you
It feels like there are a lot of holidays and a lot of them, we know nothing about. For me, I had no idea that June 7th was National Donut Day.
As soon as I heard about it, I knew I needed to write something up. If you're like me and are mostly clueless about this day, you won't know anything about the Donut Lassies. Let's just start with the beginning though as this holiday was created by the Salvation Army in 1938 and has been celebrated ever since.
However, it started before then in 1917. As a way to keep morale up with soldiers, two officers Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance started frying donuts. Of course, those sweet treats won the hearts of soldiers and helped to keep their morale up. Eventually, those serving the donuts became known as "Donut Lassies" and it helped to make donuts even more popular today.
Who knows what we'd do today if it weren't for the Donut Lassies? Honestly, I can't imagine a world without donuts in it and that just goes to show how much history most of us don't know.
The fun of National Donut Day doesn't end there.
If you're like me and are celebrating National Donut Day, you might be thinking about picking up your favorite. A recent study shared by the New York Post included a psychologist who is sharing what your favorite donut says about you and even shared some findings on which donuts are the most popular.
You can read the full study but I wanted to share an abridged version. For those who prefer Glazed Donuts, you're more than likely traditional and have a lot of loyalty and patience for others. If you enjoy a Chocolate donut, you know life is hard so why not enjoy some chocolate and you're known for being more social.
For those who go for a jam-filled treat, you're very logical and have a lot of fond memories of growing up and your childhood. Next is custard-filled which represents someone who is passionate, sociable, and generally a fun time. Next up are the sprinkle donuts which means you're all about having fun, are open-minded, and like to cheer people around you up. Last but not least is the iced donut which means you're genuine and kind-hearted. No matter which donut you're grabbing, National Donut Day is perfect excuse.
Lastly, I wanted to share some other fun data shared in the study. In the survey, most people preferred a jam-filled donut with a staggering 51% saying that. People are also more likely to grab a donut from the grocery store versus a local bakery. Lastly, 36% of the people surveyed said they'd be willing to try something new from their typical order. All in all, there's a lot of excitement around National Donut Day so why not go out and celebrate?
