Lady Faith Talks The Evolution of Hardstyle And The EDC Las Vegas Festival
Lady Faith is one of the biggest names in Hardstyle, growing her sound and fanbase for over ten years. A self-made inspiration in the music industry, Lady Faith has crafted a solid career and following in Hardstyle. She understands what makes the genre tick, why fans are so drawn to it, and works hard to help and encourage other women to step up to the plate and try their hand in joining such an integral part of the music world. Lady Faith also discusses the significance of being a part of the EDC Las Vegas Festival for the twelfth year in a row, a true sign of devotion to her love for music, performing, and her fans.
Culturess: How would you say Hardstyle has evolved over time?
Lady Faith: I started producing around 15 years ago, and the sound has changed so much since then. To be honest, the sound from back then has many similarities to Hard Techno today. Over time, Hardstyle has progressed and become more bass heavy and faster and far more complicated to properly produce, but the structure has remained the same for the most part. You can still expect soaring melodies, amazing vocals, and hard-hitting bass lines. unlike any other genre in the world of EDM.
Culturess: What went into creating your music style and strong fan base?
Lady Faith: I think I have a very special relationship with my fans where I get to speak to them through my music and share certain moments in my life. Before I was a DJ, I was a raver. Back then, EDM, in general, was far more underground, so we partied in warehouses or under bridges. In fact, there was a period when you didn't even know where the event was held until an hour before doors opened. The focus of these events was PLUR -- Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect and we made sure everybody was invited. As such, my music began with Hard House, and Hard Trance, and Early Hardstyle. These influences are still prevalent in my productions today. I earned my fans the hard way before social media was so dominant, and they have stuck with me ever since.
Culturess: This will be your 12th consecutive appearance at the EDC Las Vegas Festival. What about this show keeps you coming back every year?
Lady Faith: It's the best festival in the world, in my opinion. Being under the electric sky is kind of magical, and I'm blessed to be able to be a part of this event 12 years straight, and every year it gets better, so I'm having a great time. It has been fascinating to watch Pasquale Rotella grow his event business into the premier event company in the entire country. Being a part of the amazing growth of Basscon and the Hardstyle scene here in America has been the privilege of my life. I am not sure if any other acts have performed at EDC LV 12 times in a row, but I doubt there are many and certainly no female acts. It is a blessing to be a part of this amazing scene.
Culturess: How do you keep your energy up for every performance?
Lady Faith: It just comes out of me. I can't really explain it. Once I hear the music, I just go into this different mode, different person, and I can't stop dancing and singing and Hardstyle is truly an amazing genre. It's very infectious. As soon as I hear it, I'm a different person. This enormous amount of energy comes out of me, and I love the music with all my heart and soul.
Culturess: How do you work toward helping there be a place for women in the industry?
Lady Faith: I've tried in all my years in this business to set a good example for the ladies that watch me, that I inspire. I have always tried to create a safe space for them to come to me, ask for guidance, any type of help that I can give them. I have many of my own club shows where I either book an all female line-up or I try to make sure I have a few female artists on those line-ups to put a platform under them and make sure the people get to see them and sometimes I have them as direct support so they get seen by the most amount of people and honestly I'd do absolutely almost anything to make sure that females have a bigger platform, more people get to see them, and appreciate their amazing talent, and I am waiting for the day where the festivals are gonna be like 50/50.
Culturess: What went into preparing your setlist for this year's festival?
Lady Faith: A lot of productions. I've been working on a lot of different new tracks and bootlegs and stuff to keep things interesting. People know that I like doing pop bootlegs, in Hardstyle, of course, and I've created two new ones that I'm gonna play for them. I have a new track coming out June 6th on my label Scantraxx called "Lights Out." So, I've been producing a lot of music, and I think this set is gonna be very fun. I can't wait.
Culturess: How did you get your start in music?
She actually still does, and I was in awe of her, and I stood in front of her in the middle of the dance floor just staring at her, going, 'Is this a possibility?
Lady Faith: I always wanted to be in music somehow, and I remember I went to a club in Los Angeles and I saw a female DJ named Lisa Lashes, who is from the UK and played a genre called Hard House. As a Persian / American female, I never thought that a woman could be so confident and satisfied with their choice of career and I was determined to follow in her footsteps. From there, it has been a lot of hard work, but it's my genuine hope that other prospective female DJ's see my performances and use that as a stepping point to launch their own careers in this magical industry. If I can do it, so can they, and I am always willing to support new female acts as they transition into the scene. We still need far more female artists in this industry, and I will never stop fighting for this important cause. DJ's are also role models, and we need to set the right examples for these young fans.
Culturess: How have you say that you have changed over the course of your journey so far?
Lady Faith: I haven't changed much. I still believe in the same things. I still have the same ideas. My music is way more developed now, better than it was before. But as for the mentality of the whole thing, I'm still the same person. I still have the same ideas that I did back then, and I continue with them because they work for me so well.
Culturess: What would you say is the most important part of putting together a track?
Lady Faith: Well you gotta consider a lot of different things. But, right now I'm all about the energy level of the music and what I want to see happen on the dance floors, so I try to be very up to date with all the different wonderful kicks that are going on in the Hardstyle genre right now. I love melodies so I try to be very unique in my melodies and how I present them. I try to find vocals that are very pleasant and either send a message or make you feel really good. So, it a process and I absolutely love the production side of things.
