2023 hasn't been a good year for the MCU, following the criticism of its recent projects regarding quality issues, poor special effects, and box office decline. Nevertheless, certain Phase 5 projects, like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Season 2 of Loki, and obviously the most recent What If...? season 2, turned out to be exceptions.

Announced in 2019, What if...?  was the first-ever animation series in the franchise that explored various possibilities of the popular events in the MCU. The show gave rise to stories that brought back old and new characters and tossed them into strangely familiar narratives in each episode.

Following a successful season one, the series was soon renewed and streamed episodes regularly during Christmas week until Dec. 30. Season 2 quite took us on an adventure and indeed gave us some jaw-dropping moments, such as Captain Carter jumping between different realities for her mission, the introduction of a new character, Kahhori, Avengers Assembling in 1602 and an epic finale against Strange Supreme.

If you're wondering whether season 3 is on Marvel Studios radar or not, then yes, it definitely is, and we'll have a look at all the details of the upcoming season below.

Everything you need to know about What If...? Season 3

As the latest season wraps up,  Marvel Studios has already confirmed that season 3 is already in development. The finale ending witnessed Peggy Carter asking the Watcher to take her back to her universe through the scenic route. The view magically transitions to the duo observing the Yggdrasil, which has Loki at the center of it, holding together the timelines as seen in Loki's season finale. Although it's unclear whether teasing Yggdrasil is Marvel cooking something for its upcoming season or Avengers projects, or it's simply to maintain continuity and acknowledge Loki's sacrifice that left a big impact on the MCU.

As of now, Marvel Studios has officially released the first look of season 3, in which we see a glimpse of Bucky Barnes ( Sebastian Stan) and Red Guardian (David Harbour) teaming up on a road trip, where they are stopped by Bill Foster, a.k.a Giant Man, that further leads into gun firings and a wild car chase. See the trailer below.

In  a recent interview, Marvel Studios Head of Animation Brad Winderbaum revealed some details about the upcoming season, along with how it will dive into the stories of the beloved characters, including The Watcher, who is voiced by Jeffrey Wright.

"The fact that we have What If…? going into a third season, it means that we can go a little bit deeper with these characters, especially the Watcher. It's a Multiverse story, they're standalone stories, but there is a serialized aspect to it because there's this narrator who loves the subjects of these stories, he's the ultimate fanboy. He's watching, like we all watch. And he loves these characters like we do. So we can dig in a little deeper into what makes him tick in the second season, and then into the third season, we kind of get to know his humanity a lot more."

Also, the head writer and executive producer, A.C. Bradley, has confirmed her departure from the franchise in a tweet after completing two seasons of this series. As of now,it's not yet confirmed who will be replacing her.

What if...? season 3 will be "streaming soon" on Disney+.
