Is the NFL and its fans too concerned with Taylor Swift?
Taylor Swift is a massive superstar and we all know it. The woman can't even walk outside without getting mobbed.
Of course, the talk doesn't stop especially when people are online. Since her relationship with Travis Kelce became public, Swift has gone to some of Kelce's games. When she first showed up, all cameras were pointed to her. Slowly but surely, things have started to move away from her.
For most NFL fans, they don't even seem to notice that Swift is there and when I was watching, I rarely noticed them showing Swift. If anything, they made a conscious effort not to show her but maybe that's just me. Either way, the continued discussion of Swift showing up and supporting her boyfriend has ruffled the feathers of NFL fans and frankly, it's starting to get annoying.
As someone who has been an NFL fan for over a decade and even covered the NFL in the past, NFL fans continuing to harp on Taylor Swift is becoming overbearing.
Is it too much to keep Taylor Swift out of the spotlight in the NFL?
Let's begin by making the obvious point that the NFL is never going to stop showing Taylor Swift. It might only be for a few seconds, but the company will never stop. Swift has brought legions of fans to the NFL and they're counting on that. At the end of the day, the NFL is a business, and having someone who isn't directly connected to them but is still powerful is just a smart PR move.
The issue that seems to keep plaguing the NFL fanbase is everyone endlessly talking about being "sick" of seeing Swift and outlets reporting on her NFL appearances too much. Frankly, I can see some of the criticism, but honestly, it's going to happen. Swift is the biggest musician in the world right now and people are going to talk about her unless she decides to go into hiding as she did before reputation.
Frankly, who could blame Swift for wanting to go into hiding after the year she's had? She's putting on multiple shows per week, performing for millions of fans, and juggling all of that while also being a partner and businesswoman. If I was her, I wouldn't want to have even more cameras in my face when going to support my partner. If anything, she probably just wants to go to the game, unwind, and just enjoy herself which is what most of us want to do when we're not working.
Aside from that, sports outlets are covering Swift and putting the focus on her. If there's nothing else for you to cover aside from Swift, that's a problem. Given how long the offseason is, I'm sure there are much more pressing items to cover than her including your team's Super Bowl hopes, predictions for week 1, or even, just some fantasy coverage. Anything is better than putting the spotlight on someone who has no impact on what's going on in the field.
While sports media does play a role in this, non-Swift fans can't seem to keep her hands out of their mouths, making things even worse. Those who claim they "don't care," continue to discuss her more than fans do and it's frustrating. I've absolutely loved Taylor Swift since Taylor Swift was released in 2006 and have been listening since. However, I don't think Taylor attending her boyfriend's game is big news. If anything, it's a piece of normalcy in her already complicated life so why not just let it go?
Of course, fans of any kind rejoice in being hateful and making sure others are having as miserable of a time as they are so it's unlike fans are going to stop behaving this way. Until then, we'll be subjected to more commentary on a subject that no one is talking about anymore. Ultimately, the point was proven for me when fans rejoiced at Travis Kelce being on stage for Taylor's show and all of us loved it.
Hopefully, at some point, we'll see glimpses of Taylor Swift enjoying her time as a WAG without having to hear from every Dad, Brad, and Chad about how she's ruining football. Until then, let's all blast "The Alchemy" and enjoy being miserable and magical, oh yeah!
