Family Guy has been delivering laughs since its debut in 1999. The series premiered on January 31st, 1999, on football's biggest night, Super Bowl 33. That makes Family Guy 25 years old, and I just happen to remember when it premiered. Ever since then, we have witnessed Peter Griffin and his family's nonstop shenanigans. It has created immense laughter, even if much of the material is raw and heavily sardonic.

Fox/Disney has renewed Family Guy for season 23 in 2023, which is expected to premiere in the fall of 2024. With its renewal, Family Guy is the second longest-running animated show on Fox, behind The Simpsons, which has been renewed for season 36.

You might recall the 2014 The Simpsons x Family Guy crossover, in which both families met and ended up in court over beer. To date, it's one of Family Guy's best episodes, as it subtly reflects Homer and Peter's fast-paced intelligence in gear. Stewie and Bart form a friendship that dissolves when the former takes things a bit too far. Anyway, it always has me in an eruption of laughter.

But fans of the show are concerned about whether the Rhode Island-based Griffin family would be leaving the network. Since its shift from Sunday nights to Wednesdays, the ratings have steepened. Naturally, this happens when such a change occurs on TV and often leads to cancellation. Fox has canceled Family twice due to insufficient ratings, only to be brought back to high DVD sales and its strong presence on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network.

Will Family Guy be cancelled for a third time?

Seth MacFarlane confirms the future of Family Guy

Family Guy's creator, Seth MacFarlane, sat down with his fellow cast members, Seth Green (Chris Griffin), Mila Kunis (Meg Griffin), and Alex Borstein (Lois Griffin), and two of the show's executive producers, Rich Appel and Alec Sulkin, for the Los Angeles Time to discuss Family Guy's historical impact, its 25th anniversary, and whether the animated sitcom would be ending anytime soon.

You can all breathe a collective sigh of relief because MacFarlane confirmed that Family Guy will continue for another 25 years!

"At this point, I don’t see a good reason to stop. People still love it. It makes people happy, and it funds some good causes. It’s a lot of extraneous cash that you can donate to Rainforest Trust, and you can still go out to dinner that night. There was a time when I thought, it’s time to wrap it up. At this point, we’ve reached escape velocity. I don’t know that there’s any reason to stop at this point unless people get sick of it. Unless the numbers show that people just are, “Eh, we don’t care about ‘Family Guy’ anymore.” But that hasn’t happened yet."

New episodes are expected to roll out through 2025 and maybe, could even expand further.
