The recent years have been disastrous for the MCU, following the criticism it garnered around VFX, poor quality projects, and weaker storylines, leading to a faded popularity and devoted fans losing interest. While there were projects that didn't live up to the MCU's original quality standards, there were also a few good ones that brought back audience interest, which of course include WandaVision, Loki, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, the MCU's most recent release, The Marvels, did garner some positive as well as negative reviews from the audience and critics. While the movie was bearable and entertaining, it flopped miserably and wasn't even close to matching the box office success of its prequel, which indeed became the highest-grossing female-led movie.

The Marvels does get plus points for its post-credit scenes, which gave eager fans reassurance on the highly anticipated X-Men and Young Avengers' expected arrival. However, Brie Larson's future in the MCU was kept open-ended, leaving the audience unsure of what was next for her. But don't worry, Larson has already given her take on the future of her character in the MCU, which we will see below.

Ever since her debut in the 2019 movie, Larson's Captain Marvel wasn't well received by numerous people, who constantly threw hate and misogynistic comments at her. However, there were also fans who loved how Larson brought to life a powerful female character who was strong-headed, fearless, and rebellious. In spite of the criticism subjected to her portrayal, she kept on playing the character with grace, and her 2019 movie's success was enough to silence the haters.

Nevertheless, in an interview with Variety at the D23 Expo, the Room actress was asked about how long she would like to play Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel, and her response at that time was uncertain. Look at the comment below.

"“I don't know. Does anyone want me to do it again? I really don't know. I don't have the answer to that.”"

After the failure of the 2023 movie, it looks like she is still unsure about her character's future in the MCU, as she played coy when asked about what's next for Captain Marvel at the SAG Awards. She said, "I don't have anything to say about that." (via Extra)

Captain Marvel, being one of the main characters, might have the possibility of starring in the upcoming two Avengers projects. However, a third Captain Marvel sequel seems difficult at this point, keeping in mind the ratings and failure of the second installment. However, as the MCU is now going back to focusing on quality by reducing the number of projects released in a year, yet we will never know what's on their cards next for our beloved characters.
