Avatar: The Last Airbender Renewed For Seasons 2 And 3 At Netflix
Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender is getting the opportunity for Aang to reach his destiny and defeat the Fire Nation. With a double renewal that guarantees the series will continue for two more seasons, with an official statement that the show will end with its pre-determined third season, it appears that Aang and his friends will gain more time to discover the world, make new allies, and eventually prevent a mass genocide when Sozin's Comet arrives.
While the official episode counts for each upcoming season have yet to be revealed, continuing seasons two and three with such short episode counts could ultimately have questionable impacts on the story as a whole.
Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender has been hurt by its pacing, but if Netflix does not extend its episode counts, could eight one-hour episodes harm other significant storylines, such as Zuko's beloved redemption arc from the original animated series?
While the live-action portrayal of the story is wonderfully choosing to tell its own story, rather than creating a shot-for-shot iteration of the original series, arguably, eight episodes per season is not enough to reach the character development each character needs in order for them to have significant character growth, or for audiences to latch on to these characters with strong emotional attachments.
It took season one several episodes for Katara to start breaking out of her shell and start to become a more fleshed out individual. What does that mean for Toph when she is eventually introduced?
Season two has the inevitable role of having Aang devote time to mastering waterbending while learning earthbending. Season one has done a fantastic job of separating itself from the original animated show, keeping the spirit alive but taking on the story from an entirely new and darker angle that allows for changes that still keep the plot and characters interesting.
