From the person who has a pair of spandex bell bottoms in the closet to the person who would rather dress in the latest TikTok fashion, ABBA’s music crosses generations. In the jukebox musical Mamma Mia, the timeless songs weave their way into a relatable story and a delightful night of theater.
The Mamma Mia story is well-known. Before the star-studded movies captivated audiences, the musical adaptation played to sold out audiences. Even though some people may never personally experience the beauty of a Greek Isle, the musical’s plot has many relatable aspects. From wanting a connection with a parent to longing for an epic love affair, these ideas are universal.
While there is an aspect of escapism woven into the plot, it is the ABBA music that sets the tone. The bubbly, enthusiastic songs compel the audience to let their cares disappear and encourages them to step into the possibility of a happily ever after. Even if the occasional decision has consequences, the happy ending is waiting in the wings.
Like most jukebox musicals, some songs work well in the moment and others seem to be forced into the scene. Even though people long to hear the iconic melody of "Dancing Queen," a few of the songs seem to work better than others. Yes, “Take a Chance on Me” can fit into the plot but others seem a little less successful.
Currently, Mamma Mia is on a National Tour. The powerful ensemble cast makes each number look effortless and gel well as a group. They allow one person to shine then transition to the background and vice versa. It is seamless.
From belting the big numbers to adding subtly to the quiet ones, the production offers a diversion from the chaos outside the theater. For over two hours, the focus is on good music and a happily ever after.
While all the songs are familiar, the little humorous moments are a highlight. Carly Sakolovr and Jalynn Steele (Rosie and Tanya) are scene stealers. They are willing to go all in on the joke. Their voices are powerful, but their timing is impeccable. From the subtle hip shimmy to the over-the-top pratfall, those moments have the audience roaring with laughter.
Even for people who have seen this production before or have watched the movie on repeat, there is something about live theater that makes watching the performance engaging. Each night is different and that adds to the uniqueness of the experience. For a few hours, everyone is part of that wedding weekend on a Greek isle and love is the reward for a life well lived.
And, like most jukebox musicals, everyone waits for the encore for the moment to get up and sing along. After much toe-tapping and restraint, the final bows are the time when the vivacious nature of ABBA music takes hold and everyone lets loose. Some people might never dare wear platform boots or spandex, but everyone can belt out a course of "Dancing Queen."
Currently, Mamma Mia the Musical is playing at the Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando. The National Tour continues throughout the year. Additionally, the musical is on Broadway.
