Bloody, chaotic, stimulating, explosive, and uplifting, are just some of the words that crossed my mind when I watched the Freaky Tales trailer for the first time. I decided a rewatch was in order to get a better scope of the fast-paced and thrilling trailer that embodies the late 1980s fairly well.
Starring Pedro Pascal, Angus Cloud, Jay Ellis, Normani, Ben Mendelsohn, and Tom Hanks, Freaky Tales transports audiences to 1987 Oakland where music is the force that drives and connects the very different lives of those who are good, bad, maybe somewhere in between and those who just want to live life to the fullest. It appears as though Pascal finds himself in the middle of the story as a criminal ready to leave his violent and complicated past behind him.
That is if Mendelsohn will allow it, which obviously he will not. They need Pascal for one more big job involving robbing the high-profile NBA basketball star Sleepy Floyd's home.
When Pascal refuses, the big guns come out. But he's not one to backdown to threats he's probably handled a dozen times over.
In the midst of all of this we have romances blossoming amongst rebel youth, neo-Nazis, a close-knit rap duo, and a whole city about to be turned upside down that. At least that is what I can gather from the trailer alone.
Accompanying the trailer is 1980s synthesizers, style, and a whole lot of appealing neon. In a film where audiences will be able to follow multiple characters, with opportunites to resonate and root for some, while despising others, I can't help but wonder who will survive and find their happy ending.
Given the way the trailer opens, Pascal might find his life about to end just as another's about to begin. But we'll have to wait and see how this story plays out.
Who knows, maybe there will be yet another twist no one will expect. Have we grabbed your attention?
