Born on January 24, 1925, and passed away on April 11, 2013, at the age of 88 years old, Prima Ballerina Maria Tallchief's success and legacy have just resulted in the decision for Barbie to honor her with an Inspiring Women Doll.

Barbie's choice to honor Maria Tallchief comes as a part of celebrating Native American Heritage Month. To make sure the doll was as accurate to Maria Tallchief's likeness as possible, Barbie recruited Maria Tallchief's daughter, Elise Paschen.

According to the official press release, Dr. Elise Paschen stated,

""I am thrilled that my mother, Maria Tallchief, is receiving a Barbie Inspiring Women doll in her honor. She encouraged me to pursue my own dreams as a poet, and it brings me joy that her story can inspire other young girls to discover their passions and pursue them. There is immense value in honoring your own heritage while also breaking down barriers through the power of artistic self-expression - whether it is through dancing, writing, or another passion - and I hope this doll instills that power in everyone.""

Barbie will also donate to the Center for Native American Youth through the Barbie Dream Gap Project. The Center for Native American Youth was founded by Byron L. Dorgan, a former U.S. Senator, in 2011.

Maria Tallchief's adventure from growing up in Fairfax, Oklahoma to making a splash and a name for herself in New York City in the world of dancing is a spectacular one, and one that deserves its own doll in the recognition of Maria Tallchief's accomplishments as a dancer and an individual.

Barbie's Inspiring Women Doll has once again chosen a person that young girls can look up to and see a future for themselves, as well as appreciating those who came before them.

As for adults, such a choice can be a healthy acknowledgment to the growth of loving and appreciating women, and the joy and success they bring to the world.

The Maria Tallchief Inspiring Women Doll can be found on Mattel's website.
