Before there was Travis and Taylor, there was the Sugar Blitz series by Jamie Wesley and we’re now getting the second book: A Legend in the Baking.
Fake It Till You Bake It was one of the first books I ever reviewed on Culturess so this series holds a special place in my heart. Additionally, I adored the first book so I was even more excited to dive into A Legend in the Baking.
If you’ve never read this series, it follows three NFL players who co-own a cupcake shop together called Sugar Blitz. As someone who is an NFL fan and loves cupcakes, this series was tailor-made for me. Fake It Till You Bake It was released in 2022 and after a bit of waiting, we’re getting A Legend in the Baking.
I’d like to thank St. Martin’s Griffin for sending me an ARC so I was able to read and review this one early.
A Legend in the Baking is another sweet installment in the Sugar Blitz series.
Before getting into my review, the Sugar Blitz books can be read as standalone stories but it’s best to read the series in order. In this book, we do see the couple from the first book a lot so if you don’t want to be spoiled for that, make sure to read Fake It Till You Bake It before you pick up the next book.
A Legend in the Baking follows August Hodges, the most reserved member of the Sugar Blitz trio and of course, he goes viral. While working the front at the store, he hears guys complaining about getting their girlfriends cupcakes and not being manly. August confronts them and of course, people start videoing him and he goes viral.
Thankfully, who better to help him than Sloane, his partner and best friend’s little sister? Sloane quits her job the day of the rant and hears it. She immediately knows the potential it has and shares one post, resulting in the cupcake shop being swamped. Her brother, Donovan wants her to do the brand’s socials but she doesn’t want to rely on him for a job. She eventually accepts his offer as it’s a way for her to get her dream job.
With August now going viral and being known as Sugar Bae, Sloane has no choice but to be in close proximity to him. Using her social media expertise, she helps Sugar Blitz to capitalize on its popularity. These two obviously are fighting the attraction between them and it’s funny to watch just how much they try to deny it.
In addition to the present storyline, we’re following Sloane and August, meeting 12 years ago when Sloane was in high school and August in college. Their relationship is a bit murky then as August has a girlfriend yet still likes Sloane. Either way, Sloane ends up feeling embarrassed as she confesses to August and he rebuffs her.
Eventually, that situation does come up in the present and it was handled so beautifully by Jamie Wesley. Seeing these two talk about it so openly and honestly was refreshing. In addition to the romance, the Sugar Blitz boys are dealing with a town protesting their new location. While it does end up being a part of their social media campaign, it felt incredibly realistic and made me like the book even more.
With some fun steamy scenes, plenty of great tension, and loads of tasty cupcakes, A Legend in the Baking is another fun installment in the Sugar Blitz series. Now all we have to do is wait to find out who Nicholas will end up with since he’s the playboy of the group.
A Legend in the Baking by Jamie Wesley is out now where books are sold.
