As Indigenous People’s Day (formerly Columbus Day) falls on a Monday, many of us get to kick back and enjoy the holiday without the stress of work. It also means that many businesses are closed for the holiday which can make it difficult to determine who will or won’t be open on the holiday including the banks.

While it’s generally easier to keep track of when the banks will be closed on some of the bigger holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving, the same isn’t always the case for holidays such as Indigenous People’s Day.

In fact, it’s likely the mystery surrounding banking hours for Indigenous People’s Day that brought you here today. So let’s not waste any time and dive right on into the burning question on your mind: are banks open today?

Are banks closed on Columbus Day? (2023)

Unfortunately, if you’re in need of making a trip out to your local bank on Indigenous People’s Day, we have some bad news for you. Like the post office, banks close their doors for federal holidays and do not operate during their normal business hours.

There is some good news though! While most banks will be closed on Oct. 9, you will still be able to utilize mobile banking apps for select services. You will also be able to access ATMs to make certain transactions, as ATMs will remain open for the holiday as well.

We will add, that if you bank at a locally owned bank rather than a chain such as Chase or Fifth Third, it might not hurt to call as they might be operating on limited hours for the holiday instead of closing their doors entirely.
