Actor star Bruce Willis is facing his toughest battle. The 68-year-old was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in February 2023. Willis’ diagnosis with FTD came one year after the actor retired because of aphasia.

The Die Hard star has a tough road ahead, but he has a huge support system. His wife Emma, ex-wife Demi Moore, and his five daughters have come together to help him.

Willis’ health problems have made him step back from the public spotlight, but there’s news to report on his condition.

Emma Heming Willis provides an update about her husband Bruce Willis’ dementia battle

Willis’ diagnosis has motivated his wife Emma to raise awareness for FTD. On Monday, Sept. 25, the former model appeared on The Today Show alongside the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration CEO Susan Dickinson.

Their appearance kickstarted World Frontotemporal Dementia Awareness Week, which runs from Sept. 24 to Oct. 1. During the interview, Heming Willis shared an update on her husband’s condition with host Hoda Kotb.

She revealed that “it’s hard to know” if Bruce is aware of his condition. The mom of two then explained that the diagnosis has been difficult for the family.

"“Dementia is hard. It’s hard on the person diagnosed, it’s also hard on the family. And that is no different for Bruce, or myself, or our girls. When they say this is a family disease, it really is.”"

When the family finally received the answers about Willis’ diagnosis, Emma called it a “blessing and the curse.”

"“To finally understand what was happening so that I could be into the acceptance of what is-it doesn’t make it any less painful, but…just being in the know of what is happening to Bruce makes it a little easier.”"

Heming Willis has become a caregiver to her husband, although she prefers the term “care partner.” However, caring for a sick loved one can be stressful, and she’s learned to make time for herself.

"“It’s important for care partners to look after themselves so that they can be the best care partner for the person they’re caring for.”"

Although the family has their day-to-day challenges, they’re reminded to find “beauty amongst the sadness.”
