Cynthia Nixon initially auditioned for Carrie on Sex and the City
Cynthia Nixon is famous for her Emmy-winning role as Miranda Hobbes on Sex and the City. For six seasons, Nixon played the fiery, quick-witted lawyer on the HBO series. The actress later reprised her role in the two films and the revival And Just Like That.
However, if things had worked out differently 25 years ago, Nixon could’ve played the show’s lead character.
Cynthia Nixon was considered for Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City
When Sex and the City producers were casting for the lead role of Carrie Bradshaw, they auditioned several actresses. Among the group was Nixon and Kristin Davis, who plays Charlotte York.
In an interview on the And Just Like That…The Writer’s Room podcast was blunt about her dismal audition. “I auditioned, and they were like, ‘Yeah, not so much.'”
Although she didn’t land the role of Carrie that didn’t stop Nixon from trying to get on the show.
"“And I’m usually not so proactive, but…at the time it didn’t seem like there was four women. It seemed like there was seven. It’s a show that shoots in New York, and that never happens. There’s gotta be one of those women I can play. Couldn’t they see me for somebody else?”"
Nixon would audition for the role of Miranda. However, when she didn’t hear back from the producers, she assumed all was lost. But thanks to some badgering from her manager, Nixon got the part.
"“My manager cried on the phone. She was like, ‘You guys are crazy. This is the person you want for the part.’ Then they said yes.”"
With Nixon as Miranda and Davis as Charlotte, the producers cast their original choice, Sarah Jessica Parker, as Carrie. Although it’s curious to think what the show would’ve been like if Nixon played Carrie instead of Miranda.
