Gal Gadot was Margot Robbie’s first choice to play Barbie

Actress Gal Gadot is accustomed to playing iconic characters in blockbuster movies. She’s best known for her role as Wonder Woman in the superhero franchise.

Gadot has had many other roles, and if fate had worked in her favor, she could’ve been starring in a 2023 summer blockbuster.

Gal Gadot was in contention to play Barbie

Barbie has become the biggest blockbuster movie of 2023, raking in $1 billion. Margot Robbie plays the title character and also serves as a producer for the film.  Initially, Robbie wasn’t going to star in the movie and wanted Gadot to play the lead character.

In a May 2023 interview with Vogue, Robbie revealed why Gadot was her initial choice for Barbie.

"“Gal Gadot is Barbie energy. Because Gal Gadot is so impossibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being that beautiful because she’s so genuinely sincere, and she’s so enthusiastically kind, that it’s almost dorky. It’s like right before being a dork.”"

Unfortunately, scheduling conflicts kept Gadot from signing on with the film. Robbie agreed to play the character after some convincing from director Greta Gerwig.

While Gadot didn’t get the part, the actress is a fan of the movie and of Robbie. In a recent interview with Flaunt magazine, Gadot gushed about Robbie.

"“I adore Margot. Margot is one of those women who you just want to be friends with. She brings so much to the table. I would love to do anything with Margot and was very touched [by her comments]. She warmed my heart with everything that she said about me. I’m super excited for them, and I’m so excited for Barbie.”"

Although things worked out in the end, one has to wonder how the Barbie movie would’ve fared with Gadot in the role.
