Barbie is officially a blockbuster movie! The Greta Gerwig-directed and Margot Robbie-led flick had a lot of hype prior to its July 21 release. The promotion paid off because the film grossed $155 million during opening weekend beating its competitor Oppenheimer.

With its successful box-office numbers, could America be seeing more big-screen adventures of their favorite doll?

Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie share thoughts on a Barbie sequel

Anytime a movie is a box-office success, a sequel usually follows. Since Barbie has become the biggest movie of 2023, the buzz is already generating about a possible sequel.

Before the film’s release Robbie and Gerwig were asked about expanding the franchise. In a June interview with Time magazine, Robbie’s main focus was on the first film and no sequels.

"“I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planing for sequels.”"

However, the actress hasn’t ruled out adding more movies.

"“It could go a million different directions from this point.”"

Gerwig, who is on track to possibly score another Academy Award nomination, would love to return for a sequel. In a recent interview with People, the director expressed her excitement over the movie.

"“I hope the film is the launch of a world and a bunch of different Barbie movies. There’s a tone and a humor and a joy, and obviously the world is so beautiful. I want to go back to Barbie Land.”"

If a sequel does end up happening, one cast member who’d return is Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken. The actor loved working with Gerwig and Robbie and praised them for bringing the movie to life.

While there’s been no official confirmation of a sequel, given the film’s success, it would be a shock if another movie wasn’t already in development.
