Colleen Hoover admits to feeling guilty for her success
Colleen Hoover is one of the most famous best-selling authors to date. The Texas native has become popular with readers because of her engaging romance and young adult novels. Since beginning her writing journey only 11 years ago, Hoover has written 25 books and as of October 2022, has sold over 20 million copies of her books.
While Hoover’s success is definitely something to be proud of, the author is humble about her famed writing career.
Colleen Hoover felt guilty for her overnight success as an author
In 2011, Hoover was bit by the writing bug while working as social worker and raising three sons with her husband. She began working on her first novel Slammed, which she self-published in January 2012.
At the time, Hoover didn’t have high expectations for her novel. Her main reason for self-publishing the book was personal; So her grandmother could read it on her Kindle. However, the author’s life was about to change in more ways than she could imagine.
Within months of its release, Slammed topped the New York Times best seller list. It didn’t take long for everyone to take notice of Hoover’s skill for storytelling. Later that year, she signed a contract to republish Slammed and its sequel Point of Retreat with publisher Atria Books.
Since then, Hoover’s success has continued to grow. In a recent interview with Time, Hoover admits that she feels guilty about her success.
"“I feel like I haven’t paid my dues. There are so many writers who are such good, literary writers who have been hoping to hit the New York Times or find their audience for years, and it happened to me in a matter of months almost by accident. I know I can’t compare my story to other people’s, but the more I tell it, the more guilty I feel.”"
Hoover’s tale of success is much like something out of one of her books and the author’s journey is far from over. She has five more books in the works while her novel It Ends With Us is being made into a film starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, which is scheduled for theatrical release in February 2024.
