Who Did All American: Homecoming Lose As Series Regulars?
Cutting series regulars from the roster has not been unheard of in the aftermath of the CW Network’s purchase by Nextstar and their desire for budget cuts. The superhero drama series Superman and Lois had already faced having demoted several of their series regulars, and the struggle of re-working the CW has now struck All American: Homecoming.
Cast members Peyton Alex Smith and Kelly Jenrette, who play Damon Sims and Amara Patterson, respectively, have been stripped of their status as series regulars in season three. While it has yet to be seen how big of a role each character may play in season three, this does have the potential to mess with the cliffhangers season two had left behind.
Has Simone’s choice between Damon and Lando been chosen for her if Damon’s role may be limited in season three? Does the potential strife between Marcus and Amara come to fruition if both may be taking a step back?
All American: Homecoming has relied on its found family to be the heart of the series. Tennis and baseball have helped round out the strive for athletic excellence. While JR and Lando have been integral to the baseball plots as well, the series did, however, rely on Damon’s place as the main pitcher to lead those storylines. These decisions impose several questions.
Have the CW Network or the minds behind All American: Homecoming decided that Damon’s role has not brought enough to the series? He has faced several emotional hurdles, from the problems of finding a balance and camaraderie amongst his teammates on the baseball field to the painful realization about his biological family and what it takes to rebuild those relationships.
Damon has even been placed in the show’s central love triangle. Removing Damon from being a main part of the equation could potentially no longer make him a strong presence if Simone were to admit she wanted to be with Damon.
Meanwhile, Amara has been one of the beating hearts of Bringston University. Her place as a professor, followed by her promotion, had kept her involved in the school. Do the politics of the school still have as big of a role in the storylines if one of the characters at the helm of fighting for the university does not have as big of a role in the series?
However, her relationship with series lead Simone Hicks, as her aunt, has also been one of the most significant factors. Is Amara’s step back suggesting that season three may force Simone to step up more if Amara is not around as often? Or, will Amara simply be mentioned, or have her absence be explained and allow the series to move on?
How much does All American: Homecoming change with them being removed as series regulars? Who will need to step up to fill the void they leave absent? While there are no suggestions that Kelly Jenrette and Peyton Alex Smith will completely vanish from the series or that they will never appear again, reduced screen time still has the potential to bring about major changes.
Although the rest of All American: Homecoming’s cast can help round out the other various storylines and cliffhangers, cutting these characters certainly has the potential to affect the narrative direction of the show.
