Taylor Swift: Ranking the five singles from Lover
3. “You Need to Calm Down”
Let’s get right into #3 with “You Need to Calm Down.” I waffled between this one and “The Man” at the #3 spot but I ended up going with “You Need to Calm Down.” First, this song is the ultimate screw-you to people who don’t like Taylor Swift. How could you not? Second, it’s a great song for Pride and has such a fun music video. I mean the Katy Perry cameo alone is just great.
While it’s more in the “fun” category for Lover, it represents everything Lover is. It’s all about being happy, being in love, and having fun. In a way, it feels like a great companion to Mean but with a twist. It’s not so much about taking someone down but rather telling people to mind their own business and just be happy. This is technically considered the middle of the list so I ended up deciding to throw it in here especially since it’s perfect for summer.
2. “Lover”
Coming at #2 is none other than the ritual track of “Lover.” I think Taylor Swift is such a beautiful songwriter and “Lover” is one of her most romantic songs ever. There is something to be said about hearing Taylor talk about her lover, share how she feels and just generally gush about how great he is. Every time I hear this song, I get butterflies because it’s just so beautiful and romantic.
Additionally, “Lover” is one of those songs that has some great lyrics. “With every guitar string scar on my hand, I take this magnetic force of a man to be my lover,” or “I’ve loved you 3 summers now honey but I want them all.” Whether you’re attracted to the lyrics, the sound, or even the great music video, “Lover” has it all but there was no way it was going to beat out my top pick even though I do love this song.
