While some people might be listening to that true-crime podcast on their way to an exotic locale, Peacock is ready to unveil a story adventure that will captivate viewers episode after episode. Set to be one of the summer’s must-watch shows, Based on a True Story could be the series that has people watching over and over again to decipher all the clues.

Over the past several years, true crime podcasts have become hugely popular. Whether it is a chance to solve a perplexing mystery or delve into a questionable psyche, there is listening to pleasure from hearing those tales. Regardless of the soothing voice that lulls listeners into that dark realm, there must be a storyline with people wanting to listen.

The line between reality and outrageousness is often blurred in the new Peacock comedy, Based on a True Story. While the characters might be enthralled with true crime podcasts, curating that tale that has everyone listening is far more difficult than it seems. Murder might fill the nightly news, but the morality behind the story engages the listener.

Although this explanation might feel dark or even slightly perverse, the reality is that crime is not a lighthearted subject. When the dark can find the comedic underlying moments, people crave more. It might not be schadenfreude, but that moment to laugh makes the scary parts a little less deviant.

Based on a True Story is driven by Kaley Cuoco (Ava) and Chris Messina (Nathan). While the married couple seems to be struggling in daily life, they are looking, hoping, and longing for an easier scenario that can make their world less cumbersome. It is more than just a turning point as a married couple is on the cusp of becoming parents. They struggle to determine if diving into the true-crime podcast world is worth the chaos. Prosperity as the result of a deal with the devil might not be the windfall that they need.

Based on a True Story debuted on Peacock June 8 with all episodes available to stream on that day. The twists and turns will have people doing a double take as everyone watches. Even if that momentary laughter takes the sting away, the darkness might be waiting to take over once again. And, just remember, revealing the outcome might be the biggest crime of all when it comes to a good mystery.
