Taylor Swift: Ranking the singles from both eras of Red
8. “Message In A Bottle”
Moving onto the next single on my list, I decided to go with a vault track which is “Message In A Bottle.” I feel like this is really where my list gets controversial for some people yet I’ve never loved this song. As far as vault tracks go, I don’t know why she chose this one to be a single.
That’s not to say I can’t see why people love it. It’s such a catchy and fun song that’s perfect for dancing and having fun. Regardless, I don’t feel like it’s Taylor’s strongest work on Red so there was no way it was going any higher on my list. I do know that this one got decent radio play though so I can see why the record execs decided to go with “Message In A Bottle” as a single.
Frankly, after I included “Message In A Bottle,” I decided to rework my entire list and ended up changing everything. Maybe it’s a mistake, but I wanted to be as authentic as possible so let’s get into the next single.
7. “I Knew You Were Trouble”
Coming in at #7 is “I Knew You Were Trouble.” Before you come for me, just let me explain myself. I know that this song is incredibly beloved and has that same dancey fun beat that we all love. I mean I can imagine getting hyped if I was hearing this during the Eras Tour.
I love how “I Knew You Were Trouble” sounds and I adore Taylor’s voice on it yet I do feel like her other singles are stronger. I know that she does write about a few breakups on this album and I feel like there are better songs like “All Too Well” and “I Almost Do.” Even so, this is a good song and had a great music video yet it didn’t stick out to me.
Comparing it to the rest of the singles from the Red era though, it’s coming in towards the bottom for me.
