Xbox Games with Gold members get a serious throwback game and a puzzle platformer in May as the subscription offering announced its new games for this month. That’s not necessarily a fun thing, as the first offering is over twenty years old.

Below are your free games for May and the dates they’re available to download:

  • Star Wars Episode I Racer, May 1 to 31
  • Hoa, May 15 to June 14

May highlights for Xbox Games with Gold members

Take a trip down memory lane to 1999 with Star Wars Episode I Racer. This technically launched for the Nintendo 64 and was ported to other consoles in 2020.

Truly there’s not much to say about this game. If you’re a fan of the podracing that was in Episode I: The Phantom Menace and didn’t have a chance to play this game during your childhood, you can check it out. You can play as young Anakin Skywalker, Sebulba, and nearly 20 other podracers. You’ll get to race past plenty of Star Wars landmarks and creatures that will make you smile.

Next up for the back half of May is Hoa, your puzzle platformer. The unfortunate thing about Hoa is that it only takes about three hours to beat. But it is absolutely gorgeous with its hand-painted art style and peaceful music that will help you sink into your couch and relax.

You play as Hoa, a fairy who’s sent away from her tribe as an infant for unexplained, tragic reasons, and you return to use your powers to revitalize the world and its inhabitants. It feels like you’re playing a Studio Ghibli movie and it’s nice that there’s not any sort of on-screen interface (mini maps or the like) to obscure the view.

It’s a very intuitive game that doesn’t do much hand-holding and lets you learn as you go. And again, it’s not a long game either, so sit back and enjoy a couple of hours of relaxation and puzzles!
