PlayStation Plus Essential tier members are in for a quieter May for free games to play.

This shouldn’t come as any surprise, what with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor releasing on April 28 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom releasing on May 12 (plus that open beta for Diablo IV the same weekend). I’m not surprised the games for May are on the quieter side of things.

Here are your free games for May for the PlayStation Plus Essential tier:

  • GRID Legends
  • Chivalry 2
  • Descenders

GRID Legends is your racing game for the month and it only released in 2022, so it’s relatively new. There are multiple modes to choose from—story mode, cross-platform multiplayer, and you even can create your tracks. The game pits you against high-performance automobiles from across the board (cars, trucks, EVs) to determine the best driver in the world. It’s a pretty intense racing game and good for both hardcore racers and more casual players.

Chivalry 2 is a different type of hack-and-slash multiplayer game, pitting 64 players against each other in medieval times. You have twelve different classes to choose from with each of them having their strengths/weaknesses and gameplay styles. It’s first-person, fast-paced, and honestly… incredibly bloody and gruesome. But there’s something a little cathartic about trampling your enemies beneath your steed.

Last up is Descenders, a downhill cycling rogue-lite game, but even that’s just a base description. A bit of an indie darling, this game by RageSquid takes in-depth physics mechanics and adds them to procedurally generated downhill levels. You can unlock new talents and bikes along the way, which is where the rogue-lite portion comes in.

Honestly, this is probably the most fun game offered this month. It’s one of those games that’s easy to get into, but hard to master and you’ll find yourself wasting plenty of hours trying to increase your skills and perks and play “just one more level” over and over.

Next. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has a new gameplay demonstration. dark

These three games for May will be available to download starting Tuesday, May 2nd.
