All American: Spencer And Jordan Rebuild GAU Football
GAU’s football program is finally starting to take shape with an open tryout to fill out the rest of the roster. In the first episode following the grief-centric storylines, All American brings it back to football and the desire to bring GAU’s team to victory.
But, while grief as a storyline is taking a backseat, it is still in the fabric of the episode as Spencer and Jordan rely on Billy’s old ideas to center them in rebuilding their team. Sadly, Coach Kenny is not on board with their list of second-chance prospects, which would be less of a problem if Jordan and Spencer had not already reached out to two of the players on the list, Kai and Sal.
Being a father, Kai puts his son first and has a job to make sure they have money for bills. His football dreams have been left firmly in the past. However, something must have struck Kai for him to attend the open tryout.
Meanwhile, Spencer follows a similar plan. While Jordan initially believed Kai would not be joining, Spencer encouraged Sal to come to the tryout, not informing him that it was not an official invitation.
Spencer and Jordan are trying to show up for Coach Kenny, support him, and help build the team back up again. However, Coach Kenny would not be thrilled with having to break the hearts of those hoping for a second chance all over again. Luckily, he does not have to.
Sal and Kai make the team with Coach Kenny giving them each a scholarship, and he is even open to seeing more names on Jordan and Spencer’s list.
Otherwise, JJ’s partying may have finally come to a head. While JJ has shown his wish to be more focused on football and less on partying, he can not find it in him to separate from the fraternity. JJ’s partying has held him back for a while now, but a party to entice new Pledges may have been what set him over the edge.
JJ has created a reputation for himself as being the party, usually due to his personality, love of parties, and excessive amounts of alcohol. But, his heart is not in this one as he struggles to remind his fraternity brother that he is at school on a football scholarship and can not only focus on partying.
But, when JJ realizes that no one is viewing him as the life of the party and potential Pledges are more interested in leaving, JJ is willing to give in to the pressure and ignite the party boy in him with some drugs that will bring out his energy.
Sadly, JJ saw his friend fall unconscious because of the pill he had taken. While he luckily survived, it hit JJ hard. JJ shakenly admitted to Asher that he planned on asking for two pills, and that amount would have killed him.
JJ’s time as a party boy has seemingly come to a devastating end as JJ must re-evaluate his life. It is not just about taking a step back from partying; it is about stepping back from everything until he can work through his thoughts and feelings and get his life back on track.
While it is not clear what JJ will do to work things out on his own, “My Name Is” also sets up a variety of storylines to focus on regarding GAU’s football program.
