All American: Olivia Faces The Silence In “Day Ones”
Olivia Baker is next in line to tackle her grief in “Day Ones.” “Day Ones” mainly examines how Olivia mourning Billy challenges her sobriety and how, while she has not taken a drink, Olivia worries that if left alone, she will give in.
The relationship between a father and a daughter, and what it means for Olivia to realize that Billy will no longer be around for her future, is something Olivia struggles to face. But, it is also an episode that has Olivia dig deep to question why she is being tempted to drink.
As Olivia spends the day on shifts with some of the most important people in her life, such as Jordan, Layla, Nurse Joy, Laura, Coop, and Spencer, Olivia comes to a significant realization. Silence scares her more than anything, and the volume of the quiet was enough to get to her.
However, although Olivia’s story about trying to figure out how to make peace with her father’s death, as well as reconcile some of her friendships while she is at it, is at the forefront, Olivia is not the only one still dealing with the fallout of Billy’s passing.
Asher allows his PTSD to get the best of him while at an appointment with Jaymee, as his anxiety about potential problems has him incessantly worrying. Jordan struggles to open the last package Billy may have ever received in the mail. Laura admits that she still cries when no one can hear her.
But, although everyone else admits to their difficulties in moving forward, Spencer is in deep denial and guilt. He refuses to confront his grief, choosing instead to stay busy. However, Spencer’s refusal to fully accept his feelings results in Spencer causing fights with Alicia and Coach Kenny, who only want to help him.
Jabari also faces grief and guilt in the aftermath of Billy’s death. Finally, revealing to Laura what Billy’s final moments were may have been the start of Laura being ready to know the truth while giving Jabari a chance to relieve himself of being the only one to understand what really happened.
“Day Ones” delivers a conclusion highlighting the Vortex’s chosen family dynamic, proving they will always be there for each other. All American even decides to finally allow everyone in on Jordan and Layla’s relationship, effectively ending their long-time secret.
Olivia’s decision to bring back her podcast as a way to give a voice and community to those who also fear silence will help her handle all that has happened and open the door for others to deal with it.
