While Eve, Josh, and Gavin Harris have all found meaningful or significant dynamics outside their family’s relationship, Izzy has fallen behind.

For the most part, Izzy’s most integral relationships are with Eve, Josh, and Gavin, with the only non-family member she shares a connection with being long-time family friend Levi. While it makes sense that those would be who Izzy would be closest to, especially seeing as she only reached the Clearing at the beginning of season two, La Brea never spread out Izzy’s relationships the way the series has for everyone else.

La Brea was quick to introduce Josh to Scott and Riley, having him form a friendship with Scott and a budding romance with Riley. Eve joins forces with Ty and Sam to build a growing friendship and trust in the men who are helping her lead the sinkhole’s survivors.

When Gavin eventually joins his wife and son, it becomes clear that Gavin is important, already having a connection with Ella, getting involved with Caroline and James, and even spending some time with Sam and Ty.

Even the show’s other central relatives, Riley and Sam, have been shown to have growing essential relationships outside of their father-daughter dynamic. Riley’s romance with Josh and friendship with Scott have also, toward the end of season two, expanded to a growing friendship with Veronica.

Meanwhile, in the season 2 finale, La Brea offers Sam the chance to bond with Lucas over what it means to be a father.

Nearly everyone other than Izzy has found a connection outside their initial family dynamic. Of course, they have built friendships out of necessity, but it has allowed them to show new bonds and dynamics.

Izzy has not had the same opportunity. Instead, to keep Izzy involved in the plot, La Brea has chosen to have Izzy insert herself into Eve and Gavin’s storylines rather than have her seem organically included.

In season one, it made sense that Izzy wanted to be included in Gavin’s search for answers and for their family members. However, in season two, most of Izzy’s involvement is pushing herself into the story rather than others inviting her to join.

La Brea has not given Izzy any friends outside of her relationships with her mother, father, brother, and Levi. This is an element that La Brea needs to rectify to avoid Izzy turning into a one-note character.

Giving Izzy friendships beyond her family will expand her involvement in the show while also creating an opportunity to discover a new side of her. As Riley, Veronica, Scott, and Lucas may be the closest to her in age and have already begun bonding with Josh, she can be more involved in the bonds they share.

The Harris family may be the show’s central family, but they are not the only available characters with the opportunity to create bonds of friendship. As “Journey Part 2” unleashes an array of new auroras into 10,000 B.C., there is always a chance to develop new friendships with potential new survivors from different times.
