10 non-romance books to be excited about in 2023
With the start of a new year, readers are always looking ahead at what books are coming out in the upcoming year. For 2023, there are plenty of exciting books coming out including some non-romance stories.
While romance books are the main genre I read, there are plenty of other books I read during the year that aren’t romance. If you haven’t seen my romance list, I have an entire list of those books. However, these will all be non-romance books or they aren’t categorized as romance.
Instead, there are going to be some releases that are on my radar for 2023 that I’m excited about or just look interesting. Whether it’s a new genre, an author I’ve loved, or a spinoff series, it’s fair game to make the list.
Unlike the romance list though, I’ll only be talking about 10 books instead of 15 so buckle up and let’s get into some anticipated reads for 2023.
These are some anticipated non-romance books set to be published in 2023.
Let’s start off with the two graphic novels on my list. First, is the widely loved webcomic series now being published and that’s Lore Olympus. Volume 4 is set to be released on June 6, 2023, which sounds like it’s so far away but I still have to get caught up on Volume 3. The other graphic novel on my list is Stacey’s Mistake which is the 14th installment in the Baby-Sitters Club graphic novel series.
Since The BSC graphics are all based on the beloved book series, these are just fun and revamped reads of a series I loved as a kid. Surprisingly, this one isn’t set to be released until October 3, 2023. Either way, those two graphic novels are high on my anticipated list for this year.
This next category might be a shock to some, but it’s going to be horror and mystery/thriller reads. I don’t talk about it much but some of my favorite reads of 2022 were horror books. With that being said, I have a lot of them to talk about so let’s get into it.
The first release is actually upcoming and that’s How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix. I have yet to truly love a Grady Hendrix but this is a haunted house story about two siblings who come together to deal with the aftermath of their parent’s deaths. It sounds creepy and funny which is what Hendrix is known for. This is set for release on January 17th.
An author I enjoyed in 2022 was V. Castro and their release for 2023 is The Haunting of Alejandra which is about a woman being haunted by La Llorona. It sounds creepy yet insightful which is what I enjoy about her stories. The release date is set for April 18th, 2023. The next is another heavy-hitter in the thriller/mystery genre and that’s Riley Sager with The Only One. I don’t want to know much about this one but it seems like the inspiration is Lizzie Borden which sounds awesome. The release date is set for June 20th.
If I had to pick a favorite mystery/thriller author, it’d have to be Samantha Downing. The way she crafts her characters and tells stories, it’s just a delight. Her 2023 release is A Twisted Love Story which is a thriller following a couple and the misdeeds they perform. I could be totally wrong but I’m incredibly excited and don’t want to know much. This one is set for release on July 18.
The final one for the horror/mystery category is Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto. This is a new series featuring an older main character who finds a dead guy outside her shop and decides to investigate his murder and find out if one of her customers is the killer. I adore Jesse Q. Sutanto’s writing and with a release date of March 14th, this will be the perfect spring read.
Moving onto the final category, these last three books are all from different genres but are all ones I’m excited about. The first is Lost in the Moment and Found by Seanan McGuire. This is book 8 in her Wayward Children series and it’s following a new world. These always come out in January and this one was released on January 10th. Next up is Family Lore by Elizabeth Acevedo which is her first adult novel and it seems like it’s going to follow a character who decides to have a living wake and the aftermath of that.
Either way, Elizabeth Acevedo is a beautiful writer and as someone who has read and loved her YA books, this one is high on my list. The release date for Family Lore is August 1st. Last but certainly not least, the one non-fiction book on my list is Spare by Prince Harry. This one was released on January 10th and frankly, I’m just excited to read it and find out more information about him, the royal family, and what’s to come.
