Apple TV+’s dramatic trailer for the sumptuous second season of Foundation has the Galactic Empire descending into chaos with the coming of the Second Crisis. Meanwhile, the current Emperor, Brother Day (Lee Pace) desperately tries to maintain his tenuous grip on control of the Galactic Empire after ignoring psychohistorian Hari Seldon’s (Jared Harris) prediction of its demise and the subsequent disintegration of human society.

The focus of the Foundation trailer centers around Lou Llobell’s Gaal Dornick—Seldon’s protégé—along with her (warning: spoilers ahead) genetic daughter (a major deviation from the books and a fascinating revelation in the first season), Salvor Hardin (Leah Harvey) and their respective efforts to save civilization.

However, there are also clips of an unhinged Seldon, a formative role that couldn’t have asked for better dream casting than the great Jared Harris, who producers had in mind from the very start. Considering the original novels by Isaac Asimov are considered the establishment for science fiction narrative and that the imagination of bringing the seminal works to the screen took many decades, we are very lucky to have someone so perfectly cast as Harris take on the role.

Pace’s Brother Day/Emperor features prominently, which is a good thing since he was the standout last season, and the more Brother Day, the better, IMO, even though he is like completely evil (I mean, who kills every person who has been associated with someone with just the flick of his wrist?).

Glanced briefly in the Foundation trailer is the ancient and mysterious AI—and developing foil (maybe?) to Brother Day—Laura Birn’s Demerzel, who I’m hoping we see even more of this season. I loved her mysterious and tense interaction with the various emperors. I hope we get more of her history and we will perhaps delve more into her religion (such a cool concept for an AI!) as the Foundation faces the Crisis of Religion.

There are new cast members as well, including Isabella Laughland (Brother Constant), Kulvinder Ghir (Poly Verisof), Sandra Yi Sencindiver (Enjoiner Rue), Ella-Rae Smith (Queen Sareth of Cloud Dominion), Dimitri Leonidas (Hober Mallow), Ben Daniels (Bel Roise), Holt McCallany (Warden Jaegger Fount), Rachel House (Tellem Bond) and Nimrat Kaur (Yanna Seldon).

Foundation Returning cast members include Terrence Mann as Emperor/Brother Dusk and Cassian Bilton as Emperor/Brother Dawn. The next installment of the epic saga was produced by David S. Goyer and Skydance Television.

When will Foundation arrive on Apple+?

The second season of Foundation is set to hit screens in the summer of 2023. As convenient as it is to stream this gorgeous show, this is one that I wish I could see on the big screen as well, which I think would do justice to the scope of the work.

Series Description

Based on Isaac Asimov’s award-winning stories, the monumental adaptation of Foundation chronicles a band of exiles on their unprecedented journey to rebuild civilization amid the fall of the Galactic Empire. Crucial individuals transcending space and time are faced with deadly crises, shifting loyalties and complicated relationships that will ultimately determine the fate of humanity.

Season 2 of Foundation is just a few months away (well, more than a few, but you get my gist).
