Making a trip to the DMV is never exactly a highlight of anyone’s week. Typically if you’re in need of heading out to the DMV it’s because you need to tend to the renewal of a license or take care of some type of business such as getting new titles for your vehicles or picking up new tags.

Often, the lines are longer than anyone hopes which can result in a long wait time for tasks that only end up taking a few minutes to actually complete once your number is called.

No one likes to head out to the DMV, but sometimes it’s a must on a to-do list, especially on a day off. With a day off work for many on January 2, you might be looking to take care of your DMV-related errand on Monday. However, you might be wondering if the Department of Motor Vehicles will be open or closed on Monday like banks and the post office.

Is the DMV closed today? (January 2, 2023)

In many states, the DMV is closed on New Year’s Day to observe the holiday. This means that all offices, including those that offer in-person services and those that operate exclusively online, will be closed on this day. As New Year’s Day fell on a Sunday this year, the holiday will instead be observed on Monday, Jan. 2, which means the DMV will be closed on Monday.

This closure can be inconvenient for people who need to renew their driver’s license, register a new vehicle, or complete other tasks. However, it is important to note that the DMV is closed on Jan. 2 to give its employees a day off to celebrate the holiday with their families and friends.

If you need to visit the DMV on Jan. 2 and it is closed, you will have to wait until the following business day to complete your transaction. It is a good idea to check the DMV’s schedule in advance to make sure you know when it is open and closed, as well as to make sure you have all the necessary documents and information with you when you visit.

Given there could be some states in which offices will be open, it might also be worth calling your local office on the off chance that it will be open.
