Layla and Jordan’s relationship took a noticeable shift in season 4, in the aftermath of Layla’s near-death experience. Layla pushed her friends away as the season continued, but Jordan remained her unwavering supporter, a steady presence when others left.

But, as it became more apparent throughout the fourth season that Jordan and Layla’s relationship was taking a more romantic turn, fans split their reactions from excited and supportive to neutral or had strong feelings against it.

Whether it be due to Jordan’s history with Simone or Layla’s past relationships with Asher and Spencer, fans remained divided about the couple. However, it seemed All American anticipated the potential fallout or paid attention to viewers’ reactions as the series made a point to address everything fans against Layla and Jordan were commenting on.

When Jordan and Layla address their feelings for each other at the end of the fourth season, Layla acknowledges having been a Bridesmaid at his wedding to Simone, a ceremony Jordan reminds Layla never happened.

For those calling out Layla’s romantic histories with Spencer and Asher, All American covered that too. Layla acknowledges her history with Asher and Spencer as a part of her worry about the Vortex learning the truth about her relationship with Jordan.

However, All American makes it clear that making Layla the problem is not the answer and is severely wrong. The series uses JJ to highlight the issues of disrespecting Layla when he drunkenly tells Jordan that JJ will be the next member of their group Layla will date. Jordan does not stand for it and is quick to punch JJ for speaking against Layla.

When Simone faces hard feelings toward Layla for her growing bond with Jordan, Keisha reminds her that Layla is not responsible for Jordan’s feelings and should not be blamed for anything.

Layla has been burned in previous romantic relationships, primarily through Spencer and Asher breaking up with her and dating Olivia soon after. The mindset of uncertainty toward what could happen when Layla and Jordan become public may have played a role in her wanting to take things slower with Jordan and keeping their relationship a secret.

However, All American has consistently developed a healthy relationship between Jordan and Layla. Before they are officially together, Jordan continues teasing Layla but never crosses the line or disrespects her boundaries. Jordan respects Layla’s need for space, not pushing her in any way that could make her uncomfortable.

Even once they are official, Jordan agrees to keep their romance a secret. While it may bring occasional angst or complication, the series is quick to have Layla and Jordan discuss the conflict quickly rather than let it go on for too long.

As for the secret itself, Jordan and Layla have done a miraculous job hiding their romance, especially as so many moments between them happen in public spaces or plain sight. Enough of their friends have caught their strange behavior for it to be a bigger surprise that no one has already caught on.

Layla and Jordan’s relationship can not stay a secret forever, but All American: Homecoming makes the right move in having Layla tell Simone the truth before anyone else. Although Layla has advocated for her relationship with Jordan to remain a secret, she never hides it from Simone or lies.

Instead, Layla is transparent as she reveals the growing seriousness of her relationship with Jordan, how it began in a place of friendship, and how they never planned this or wished to hurt Simone.

All American allowed Jordan and Layla to grow individually and as friends before having them develop together as a couple. However, they are both strong characters outside of their relationship, and it never feels like their relationship is the only thing either of them has going on in the show.

As All American continues, Layla and Jordan may face more adversity. Still, every couple faces highs and lows. If the series continues the trend it has set, Jordan and Layla will likely make it out the other side, whether it be by strengthening their bond as a couple or intensifying their dynamic in general.
