For the first time in a few months, the PlayStation Plus free games weren’t leaked ahead of time! It doesn’t change anything that’s offered, but it’s always interesting to see.

Regardless, Sony announced the new games for the Essential tier. Below are your free games for October:

  • Hot Wheels Unleashed
  • Injustice 2
  • Superhot

Breaking down October benefits for Playstation Plus

Hot Wheels Unleashed may seem like the odd one in the bunch, but it’s honestly such a ridiculously good racer game, and the graphics are fantastic for what looks like an essential kids’ racing game. It was released last September to solid reviews.

The one detriment is that it can get a bit repetitive at times. But there are so many courses to choose from that fatigue doesn’t happen often. You also have the option to build your own courses and race them online in multiplayer co-op.

Next up this month is Injustice 2, which if you haven’t played yet since it was released, it’s fantastic. It’s the creators of Mortal Kombat taking on the DC Universe, and it’s such a unique experience with a creative, engrossing story mode that has some of the best cut scenes.

You play as Batman struggling to restore society after Superman’s Regime. The conflict between Batman and Superman weaves its way beautifully through the single-player story. It’s just a solid game all around.

Last up is indie darling Superhot, which was released in 2016. It’s your first-person shooter for the month, where time only moves when you do. It’s an insanely interesting concept that turns this FPS into more of a puzzle game. You have to think five or ten steps ahead before you move and plan your attacks accordingly.

It’s also highly stylized, which adds to the whole game. Don’t go into this expecting health or ammo drops either. Just do your best to plan your way through each stage and watch the beauty unfold.
