Do Revenge: The next teen movie classic on Netflix
Netflix’s teen movie, Do Revenge, could very well be joining the ranks of some of pop culture’s favorite films. Do Revenge follows Drea in the aftermath of her privacy being ruined after her sex tape is leaked. Although Drea believes her ex-boyfriend Max is the culprit, her friends and classmates join Max’s side of the tale, that he had been hacked and the video’s public release had been an accident.
But, when Drea meets Eleanor at a tennis club over the summer, it is the start of a brand new and dark adventure. Eleanor is about to join Drea’s school but has a dark history with one of its students, Carissa, who had turned on her and lied about Eleanor being a predator.
As school starts again, Drea and Eleanor agree to do each other’s revenge on those who had wronged them, and thus begins their twisted friendship.
Do Revenge features characters, storylines, and twists and turns that give it the chance to stand out amongst a long list of teen movies. While it does acknowledge some other successful teen movies, Do Revenge also feels fresh and original.
The characters and stories are given a satirical approach that never feels too overdone. Instead, it calls out and makes fun of the teen culture of the present moment in a way that can feel all too relatable at times.
Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke, who portray the film’s leads, shine in their roles. Drea and Eleanor always feel like three-dimensional people, and their portrayals also allow the dark comedy of the movie to come through while also bringing out more vulnerable moments of the characters.
The Netflix film challenges what teen movies are capable of by pushing itself in ways that actively work in favor of the film rather than against it.
Do Revenge makes its mark with its original elements that allow it to feel different and arguably less predictable at times than other teen movies.
