With summer coming to a close, now is the perfect time to read some new books especially Batter Royale by Leisl Adams.

While most people use the summertime to read long books, it’s also a great time to lounge in the pool and read some shorter books. While most people think of novellas or short stories, graphic novels are a great option if you’re looking for something with a bit more pizzazz.

In particular, this graphic novel has a little bit of something for everyone and is a 2022 release so it’s easy to get your hands on. Overall though, this is a perfect way to add to your TBR and then remove it quickly as it’s a pretty fast read.

Even so, this week’s #TBRTrending book might be the perfect summer treat for you.

Batter Royale by Leisl Adams could be your new favorite treat.

Unlike the other installments in this series, this is the first graphic novel to make the cut. As evidenced by the title, Batter Royale, this book follows Rose, a young waitress who wants to become a chef, and Fred, her co-worker, and friend whom she enlists to help her win a baking competition show.

Batter Royale does an excellent job of fleshing out Rose as a character but gives a lot of insight into why she acts the way she does. Additionally, we also see a lot of the side characters getting similar treatment. While it’s not to the same extent, it was interesting to see how Leisl Adams decided to portray certain characters and subvert expectations. There is a little romance in the story that you can’t help but root for, too.

Overall what makes the book so unputdownable is the baking competition. Once the competition starts, you don’t want to put the book down. Seeing all of the challenges and how Rose and Fred overcome them plus the drama, it’s just great. It really does seem to mirror all of the current popular baking competitions out there but it’s still a lot of fun.

Of course, I’d be remiss not to mention the beautiful art style and the fact that the author actually featured recipes within the book. While this book isn’t going to blow you away with its story, it’s a lot of fun and a pretty quick read. All in all, it’s a great summer treat if you’re looking to change up the format you read in or just want something light and breezy.
