Calliope Burns and Juliette Fairmont’s star-crossed romance has come to an abrupt end as Netflix cancels First Kill after only one season. First Kill followed Calliope, a monster hunter, and Juliette, a vampire, as each of them is aware they must make their first kill.

But while Calliope believes she should hate Juliette for being a vampire, she can not contain knowing they share a connection beyond the hatred they should feel toward each other. The duo embarks on a doomed romance as they attempt to tread the waters of their unique situation, including the reality that their families are enemies.

Season one concluded with a significant cliffhanger following Calliope’s brother, Theo, transitioning into a vampire. Theo’s transition gets some screentime in the finale as his mother takes him to Oliver as a way to survive safely to avoid his father’s wish to kill him.

However, Theo’s transition also means a devastating conclusion for Calliope and Juliette. Although Juliette had not intended to turn Theo into a vampire, he had been transitioned because of her. Juliette’s role in Theo’s transition is a breaking point for Calliope.

Calliope’s family had devoted their lives to fighting monsters and were not the most welcoming people toward them. So, Theo’s transition and how the family reacts to it causes strife amongst Calliope, her siblings, and their parents.

Calliope and Juliette never get a real chance to discuss what happened. The season one finale showed both of them hurt by what had happened with Theo and what it meant for their struggling relationship. Had there been a second season, Calliope and Juliette may have been able to further work through their feelings.

As it stands, Juliette and Calliope’s relationship is left in the wind without a real sense of closure. Other storylines, such as the truth about the attacking monsters and Juliette’s family’s conflicts, will also be left unanswered.
